LIGHTNING

The Lightning was one of the most famous of the clippers.
Built by Donald Mackay for James
Baines Black Ball Line in 1853-54.
The Lightning was a three masted ship, the height of the mainmast being 164'.
She left on her maid voyage from
Liverpool on the 15th May in 1854 and 77 days
later arrived at Port Phillip Heads. Her return journey around the
Cape of Good
Horn was managed in the record time of only 64 days.
The 'Lightning' is a well
documented ship - see (Ted Finch posting) at

My Great Grandparents, Charles
Stanley, wife Caroline and son Charles came to
Australia on the Lightning, arriving here on the 10th July 1876
- the date remains in my memory - Mum was born on the 10th July.
- I was born on the 10th July - needless to say, not in the same years.
- Cousins have also been born on the 10th July.
