INLAWS and OUTLAWS

From a Family Tree Scroll which was discovered in a Car Boot Sale in 2007.

I must confess that trying to 'sort' this family has been a rather confusing task.   I do not guarantee that what I have listed here is correct, there has been conflicting information from various times and people, that I doubt the full line will ever be known.   If I have found 'sound' references, they are so noted - if you can correct / add to this lineage - please do not hesitate to contact me.

son of John & Maud was

Sir Peter Stradling, Knight, 8th in descent from Sir Wm. temp. Edward I, who died c1314 at St Donat's.  Sir Peter married Johan Hawey, dau of Sir Thomas Hawey, of Cwm Hawey co. Somerset & Compton Hawey co. Dorset

Peter became custodian of Neath Castle (1296–7), joined the English expedition to Flanders in 1297, and, when Otto de Grandson visited Rome, Peter was nominated his lieutenant in Ireland (1298). Such royal and seigneurial service, together with shrewd marriages, turned the descendants of these Savoyard immigrants into English gentry. Peter's son Sir Edward Stradling (d. c.1363) succeeded to his parents' lands by 1314; Oxford Dictionary National Biography.

Sir Peter de Stratelinges was a Follower of Sir Otto, and he was the first to settle in Glamorgan. He married Joan de Hawey or Halweia, heiress of St. Donats, Combe Hawey in Somerset, and other estates in southern England. They were both in Ireland in 1298.  Lewis D.
