HARPLEY

The HARPLEY was built on the River Tamar, in Tasmania, in 1847 and was  a ship of 547 tons,

She was owned by J Raven and sailed from Hobart Town on Thursday, 29th April, 1847  reaching England on February 8th, 1848.

Here she was given a very thorough inspection by the Surveyor for Lloyds of London,
as she was classed as Al for ten years (reported in a Launceston newspaper 26th August, 1848).

There are mixed reports (see below) of life on the ship...............

The HARPLEY with Captain Thomas Buckland departed Deptford, London on May 12th 1848, bearing a second group of Lacemakers.

"The poop of the ship was transformed into a haberdasher's shop from which everything necessary was gratuitously
and unsparingly supplied to those who were in need."

In 1848 the French lacemaking factories were all closed and the English owners went home to Nottingham
and the English in Calais fell further and further into destitution. The "Papers Relative to Emigration" reported that,
thanks to Lord Ashley's intervention, there was quite a favourable response from the Colonial Office, and in due time
the English lacemakers from Calais joined other English workers on board the HARPLEY bound for South Australia.

for more info. see  Australian Society of the Lacemakers of Calais

Sample of the lacework from the voyage is still 'in the families possession'.
