INLAWS and OUTLAWS
HERBERT
SEPTIMANE HERBERT
from Roger Kelly
Note:
" Certainly Septimane didn't have a farm but he must have had some means to set
up as a Butcher in London. Septimane was sponsored, in 1838, to come to South
Australia by his father-in-law, Robert Norman, an Hotelier (Anna's marriage cert
said she belonging to St James, Piccadilly, Westminster parish - her brother
Robert Hastings Norman was married in Soho). Septimane's occupation was given as
Butcher & Ag Labourer.
Bought land and settled at Yankalilla, S Australia, in 1842, a few years after
coming to South Australia, The Yankalilla property, Whisanger, Septimane owned.
Robert Hastings Norman, Sept's brother-in-laws, John & Robert Noman eventually
owned Normanville, a delightful port/ beach village next to Yankalilla. This
area was where the South Australia Company Committee's Surveyor General, Col
Light, first landed in 1836. Septimane (marriage cert: belonged to St Mary,
Newington Parish) was a butcher in the London area so the Ag Labourer (farming
experience) was added to make certain that the South Australian Coy Committee
would look favourably on Sept's application - the S.A.Coy wanted farmer settlers
not city merchants. Later (Sth Aust Pioneer Index) Sept's occupation was given
as Merchant, pastoralist. The Norman family are helping to paint a slightly
different picture to that of the 'Herberts of Yankalilla' written by Oscar
Herbert in 1936. John Norman (farmer, hotelier and wine maker- Anna's older
brother) and his family, came out on the same ship, the 'Thomas Harrison'
arrived 25th Feb 1839, as Septimane, Anna and family. Anna's other brother,
Robert Hastings Norman (first S.A. surgeon dentist, farmer), his family and
Anna's widowed mother, Sara, arrived in 1844, possibly after Robert Snr died.
There is no Sth Aust state record for some of the births but that is not
surprising as State records were taken from christenings and many church records
were destroyed by bushfires in the early days."
