Born the same day: 12 June 1854, in different state, was cousin, Mary Ann, the first child of John Squire Underdown and Jane (Herring) was born in SA, probably at "Widworthy".


Listed in Boothby's Commercial & Trade Directory for 1882-1883 is an entry for William Underdown Ewens, as a constable in Mt. Gambier.

 

In 1883, he married Mary Ann Pickett, and after a few years, they moved to Robe and from there, to Beachport.

 

William Underdown Ewens is variously described as a police trooper or a mounted constable.

 

On the electoral rolls for this period, William suffers the fate of many an Underdown being listed repeatedly as William UNDERWOOD Ewens!
