William Ewens
William Ewens arrived in South Australia aboard the ship 'Prince Regent'
in 1839 with parents William & Sarah, sons William Robert, John Reynolds, Wolford
arrived
in Pt Adelaide, South Australia on the Prince Regent on the 25th September 1839.
Also travelling with them were the Spiller family
William was brought up at Chichester and was
a member of the Chichester Cathedral
Choir School. He was a Choir man as a
young lad and adult. Leader of the Singers in
1839 and
was a noted vocalist
for all his life
At the
time of death of his father in 1825 he was an
apprentice coach builder at the Cuttens
factory, Chichester.
He set up business with Robert Spiller at Tam O Shanter
Place, then French St and in 1841 at
Acre 80, Rundle St Adelaide.
In 1844 he took over licence of Plow & Harrow Hotel (now the
Richmond Hotel) in Rundle St. He disposed of this hotel in Dec 1847 and
retired to
1½acres at Unley where he built the Unley Inn and took out Licence in June 1848.
William died in 1848 and his wife Sarah let the Unley Inn, but on occasions had to
conduct it herself. The family lived in
the adjoining cottage.
