STANLEY

BARBER, Caroline Mary
my Great Grandmother

Like my Stanley Clan, Caroline Mary, known as Rose, remains pretty much a mystery.

I have small bits of information - but nothing that ties me back to where she was born,
who her parents were etc.

Father listed on the marriage certificate was Henry Barber, a practical engineer.  What is also of
interest is that one of the witnesses was a Henry Barber - who signed with an X..........was this a brother / relative??? surely a practical engineer would be able to sign his name?

Golden Wedding  - STANLEY - BARBER - on the 25 September, 1872 at Holloway, England, Charles, son of Mr & Mrs D Stanley to Caroline Mary, daughter of Mr & Mrs H Barber,
both of London.
Present address, Albert St, Upper Mitcham ( Rose Lane)
( which interestingly is a year out from the marriage certificate that I have which shows 30 Sept 1873).

From the marriage cert. Caroline was 20 at time of marriage.
From the immigration record, she was 22 at time of leaving England.
If I go backwards and estimate Caroline's birth from her death cert. she would have been born in
London City around 1852/3...

The only Caroline Mary near that time frame, with a father Henry -
shows as being born in Chelsea...............only problem - father is a green grocer and I later find his daughter Caroline married to someone else.      SO  when and where was she born and who were her parents?  I cannot find a Henry Barber, Practical Engineer on any of the census......

It appears that Caroline was a member of the Womens Christian Temprance Union.

The union actually was a place for alcoholics and even made alcohol free products, Sanitarium eventually bought the products, and its members  from ALL religious backgrounds.

(I did contact Sanitarium (Nov 2005) -but they were unable to provide any information from back that far .)
On the  5th Feb 1914, Caroline leased a 9 x 3 plot for a Louisa, A H Lord who eventually died in the Home for Incurables aged 82 on the 5th June 1928.
Whether this came under a 'good deed' or Louisa Lord was a relation I still don't know.  I have so far been unable to find a connection and doubt Louisa would be a 'sister' due to the age difference.
